Does your child display difficulty with understanding what they read?
Here are some at home tips to help with reading comprehension:
- Use Post-it Notes to have the student summarize the page with a word or a sentence on the sticky note.
- Have the student draw out their favorite scene from the book and have the student write a caption of what they drew.
- Have your child write down five of their memorable scenes from the story, then cut the sentences out. Once that is completed, have them order the sentences in sequence.
- Have your son/daughter choose a book to read that is challenging, but also something that he/she would like to read. The more interested the child is in the story, the better the chance they will understand what is being read.
- Challenge your son/daughter to pick a different genre of book or ask the media center specialist what they recommend depending on your son/daughter's reading interest.
- Ask your child open ended questions about the book they are reading such as "What do you like about the book?" or "Tell me about the book you are reading...". Open dialogue is vital for recognizing what they know and understand about the story they are reading.
