Being an effective writer is just as important as being an effective reader. Below are a few websites to support the young writer:
- http://www.dmoz.org/Kids_and_Teens/School_Time/English/Writing/ : This website contains dozens of diverse websites to fit the needs and concerns of different writing styles
- http://www.additudemag.com/adhd/article/4027.html: This website gives tips to parents with students diagnosed with ADD on how to help at home with writing.
- http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/parentsHome.jsp: Scholastic provides a great website for parents to help their child(ren) with reading and writing. Search for FREE graphic organizers to print at home.
Does your child not like to write? Ask him/her what five things they like to eat, read, do, play or learn and write them down in sentences, if possible. This technique not only promotes writing, but shows on paper their interest levels to both the parent and the child.
Journal writing is a great way to explore how someone feels about a subject and promotes a wonderful sense of self-expression. There are no limits to journal topics. Is a topic too formal at home? No problem! Have your child write in their journal about how they felt today.
Is your child full of imagination or creativity or both? Why not write a play, story, or a script to their own movie? This creative format keeps the child interested in what they are writing and a great way to have the parent be involved with what is being written by proofreading.
Such techniques will allow your child enjoy what they are writing due to their personal interest. The more they enjoy what they are writing about, the more writing will occur.
